Mindset creates High Performance Learning Journey®

The High Performance Learning Journey® (HPLJ) approach has been proven to dramatically increase the impact of training on workplace performance. All Mindset consultants are HPLJ certified.

The HPLJ-methodology is based on Professor Robert Brinkerhoff’s hands-on research on training participants and their managers for the last 40 years – determining what actually works, and what doesn’t. The HPLJ-methodology has proven to reduce time spent on training, increasing purposeful deployment of digital solutions as well as creating long lasting behavior change.

The HPLJ learning design methodology rests on the principle idea that in order to deliver sustained performance improvements over time any learning initiative must include four core elements:

  • Commit to the journey – Participants must be engaged enough to want to make a change
  • Build the knowledge foundation – Participants must know and understand enough to be able to meaningfully practice the desired skills
  • Practice and develop skills – Participants must be given the opportunity to practice new skills in a sheltered environment AND be given feedback with an opportunity to reflect
  • Strengthen results – Participants must be given the opportunity and direction to deepen their and skills to the point where they can take responsibility for their own performance development

When combining the four core elements, you’ll create a sustainable learning journey.

The outlines of the model, described below, consists of four different levels for training program evaluation.

Level 1: Reaction

The degree to which participants find the training favorable, engaging and relevant to their jobs

Level 2: Learning

The degree to which participants acquire the intended knowledge, skills, attitude, confidence and commitment based on their participation in the training

Level 3: Behaviour

The degree to which participants apply what they learned during training when they are back on the job

Level 4: Results

The degree to which targeted outcomes occur as a result of the training and the support and accountability package

Mindset is Kirkpatrick certified at the Gold Level. That is proof of Mindsets ongoing efforts to create new processes, tools and procedures that ensure the desired outcomes of education initiatives. We are very proud of this award since it confirms that our methodology solves the challenges that the education industry is facing worldwide.

Impact Study by Brinkerhoff Evaluation Institute (BEI)

Impact studies by the Brinkerhoff Evaluation Institute reveal that the learning technology platform Promote, when embedded with a Mindset’s high impact methodology, driving a learning to performance improvement culture.

Brinkerhoff Evaluation Institute (BEI) developed a survey to assess different aspects of learning, application of learning, manager engagement, accountability and other aspects of training.

The study looked at 7 different organizations from 7 different industries, health care, construction, banking and automotive amongst others, and their leadership training programs. All programs was stretched out in time for 6-12 months with 3-4 instructor led training modules according to high performance design. 616 participants and 441 coaches participated in the study.

There were a number of key findings from the study:

  • Exceptionally high degree of transfer from learning to performance
  • Sustainable behaviors 3-6 months after training programs
  • High levels of participant engagement
  • High levels of accountability – even without management support
  • The platform Promote drives the learning to performance culture

Compared to other programs designed for high impact, the programs using Promote scores really high on engagement and accountability even when managers are not involved (though high impact is still more common when managers are involved). 84% of the participants felt every accountable for applying their learning, and 70% were highly motivated to apply their training after the program.
